The Orb - techno maniac

イギリスのテクノミュージシャン。1988年アレックス・パターソンを中心に結成。現在はトーマス・フェルマンとの二人体制にて活動。

アンビエントやダブをキーワードにハウス／テクノのあり方を追求。「アンビエント・ハウス」なる独自のチルアウト・ミュージック・ジャンルを作り上げ、ダンス・ミュージック・シーンの寵児としてその後のエレクトロニック・ミュージックに多大な影響を与えたアーティストである。

代表作は『The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld』『U.F.Orb』『Orbus Terrarum』など数知れず。

アレックス・パターソンは、キリング・ジョークのローディーとして音楽業界入りし、その後、キリング・ジョークの所属していたブライアン・イーノも所属のレコードレーベルEG（元々はキング・クリムゾンの所属事務所）にて、A&R業務を行った。

また、その傍らクラブ「Land Of Oz」にてDJ活動も行い、そのプレースタイルはアンビエント・ハウスと称された。

1989年、ミニー・リパートン「ラヴィン・ユー」をサンプリングした1stシングル「ウルトラワールド」がいきなり全英1位に輝き、大きな注目を浴びる。

その後KLFのジミー・コーティとアルバム『Space』を製作。

さらに91年本格的デビュー・アルバム『アドヴェンチャーズ・ビヨンド・ザ・ウルトラワールド』をリリース。テクノシーンの第一線に躍り出る。

同年、清水靖晃と細野晴臣の主催したイベント「東京ムラムラ」に出演。以降何度も来日しDJやライブを行っている。

93年6月10、11日に東京ドームで開催されたYMO再生ライブの前座を務める。特に開始のアナウンスがあったわけでもないうえに内容がアンビエント・ミュージックだったため、前座のステージが行なわれていることに気が付かなかった観衆が多かったという。

近年はファースト・アルバム以来の盟友でありジャーマン・エレクトロニック・ミュージック界の重鎮トーマス・フェルマンとの共同作業が多く、2005年にはテクノ・レーベルKOMPAKTから『Okie Dokie It's The Orb On Kompakt』、2009年にはドキュメンタリー映画「Plastic Planet」のサウンドトラック『Baghdad Batteries』を送り出している。

2010年には元ピンク・フロイドの伝説的ギターリスト、デヴィッド・ギルモアをフィーチャーした『Metallic Spheres』をリリースして、新旧のファンからロック・ファンまでを驚かせた。

そして、かねてより噂されていたレゲエ～ダブのパイオニアであるリー・スクラッチ・ペリーと全面コラボ・アルバム『THE ORBSERVER in the star house』を2012年８月にリリースした。

ミニマル～クリック以降のテクノを独自解釈しながらも、The Orb本来のサウンドスケープを継承する珠玉の作品を精力的にリリースしている。
